He has been behind bars since his July 1979 arrest for the abduction and murder of a 12-year-old girl. Alcala was sentenced to death in California but died of natural causes in 2021. He was sentenced to death for five murders committed in the state between 1977 and 1979, and received an additional sentence of 25 years to life after pleading guilty to two homicides committed in New York in 1971 and 1977.

Dating game serial killer
However, a federal appeals court in 2003 overturned the sentence and Alcala was given yet another trial. Had they done so, they would have discovered he’d already been convicted and served three years behind bars for raping and beating an eight-year-old girl in 1972. Investigators initially suspected it was the work of the “Hillside Strangler,” a serial killer — later identified as two men — who terrorized Los Angeles for several months in the late 1970s. In a strange coincidence, Barcomb’s friend, 15-year-old Judith Lynn Miller, was abducted and murdered by the Hillside Strangler a month later. A few people recognized him, which led to his arrest and extradition, leading to his first-ever conviction as a sex offender. However, what no one knew at that point was that in June 1971, Rodney had killed 23-year-old Cornelia Crilley, a flight attendant, in her Manhattan apartment. She had been raped and strangled with her own stockings. Fast forward to 1974, and while Rodney was on parole, he was re-arrested for assaulting a 13-year-old girl identified as “Julie J.” in court records, who had accepted what she thought would be a ride to school from him.
